Jirik dominates outside groove at Hawkeye Downs half mile
Cedar Rapids, IA - USST trucks and MidAm trucks converged on the 1/2 mile oval known as Haykeye Downs in Cedar Rapids Iowa. There 5 trucks
running under USST rules and 17 Mid Am rule trucks in attendance. Interestigly enough, the 5 USST trucks hailed from the many
different states of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Iowa to race with the always fast Mid American truck series.
The USST trucks were off to a slow start with all starting at or near the back of the feature.
The Sevey MotorSports truck made the best showing from the back by moving up to 3rd place during the features with driver Kevin Korsomo. Caudell moved form
19th to 9th but ran out of gas with 5 laps to go. Eddie Tidwell suffered ring and pinion gear failure and Ron Polodna's brake
calipers were locking up creating many difficult driving situations for the former champion. Austin Siebert was a victim of
multiple negative circumstances when the 810 team missed the first practice session due to the absence of the tire retailer and
then missed the 2nd practice session from delays with tech inspectors. Austin had to race with no practice on tires they had
never raced on before.
The shining star of the race was Mid Am's Andy Jirik from Lonsdale Minnesota who raced from the back to the front on the
outside in impressive fashion. Jamie Farrell of Minnesota finished 2nd. USST
Hallett race winner John Vig Jr was sent to the back with only a few laps left in a controversial ruling after contact with another truck.
USST trucks will return to Cedar Rapids with Mid Am on the 25th of June 2004.
